Most kids wonder what it is like to be a grown up. For those of us who are, we know it does not happen overnight. It takes years to make the transition from the carefree days of childhood to the time when we fully develop into mature, self-sufficient adults.
This transition begins during the wonder years of young adulthood. It is a time of growth, increasing responsibilities, new experiences, and of becoming a part of the greater community.
Young men and women with special needs face all the typical issues other young people face as they transition from childhood to adulthood, but the entire process may be more challenging.
A Celebration of Adulthood
Adults NOW offers a wide range of learning opportunities to help new adults with multiple disabilities build self esteem as they acquire skills and increase self-sufficiency during the early adult years. The name of the program celebrates adulthood and the excitement of New Opportunities Waiting.
The program just celebrated its first anniversary. What an exciting year it was! Starting with only four people, Adults NOW is operating at near capacity enrollment with 21 young men and women.
Adult mentors help program participants explore their personal interests, aptitudes, and dreams—then design a stimulating daily program to help achieve them. Cooking! Canoeing! Practical living skills! Community service! Work! Creative expression! Making friends! Community outings! Exercise programs! Applied academics! Computers! So much more!
During every activity, young adults hone the skills of adulthood. They plan, collaborate, solve problems, and make decisions. They broaden their scope of experience by trying new things in real world settings. They have a great time!
Marcia was among the first to enroll in the program. Because she likes making things with her hands, adult mentors provided lots of opportunity to do that and to experience other learning adventures as well. Her mother is delighted and said, “Marcia was tired of school. Adults NOW has rejuvenated her interest in learning. Marcia loves helping to set the calendar of events. She loves the dances. The program has been a godsend.”
Kyle’s father agrees, “Kyle likes going to Redwood. He has the opportunity to choose the activities he wants to participate in. Kyle especially likes going out into the community. I am hoping Kyle can stay at Redwood for a long time.”
